Storm among EU leaders. ‘Michel irritated almost everyone’

Things are boiling at EU summits. All thanks to the decision of the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, who announced that he would resign from his position.

Last week, Charles Michel announced that he would step down as head of the European Council after the European Parliament elections. If the leaders of the EU member states do not choose a successor, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will become temporary President of the European Council from mid-July, as Hungary will lead the work of the European Union in the second half of this year.

Michel plans to run in the European Parliament elections in June.

One source cited by foreign media indicated that leaders “were not delighted” when they learned of Michel’s decision at the same time as the media. – Charles Michel upset many European leaders by announcing his plan to run in the European Council elections in June, an insider says.

Only Macron knew

Brussels sources suggest that only Belgium’s closest ally, French President Emmanuel Macron, was kept informed of the European Council president’s intentions.

EU leaders are “furious” over Charles Michel’s decision to leave office. The former Prime Minister of Belgium announced on Tuesday that he would stand for election after four years in a key position in the EU. He will therefore step down as President of the European Council in July, even though his term would last until November.

An EU official close to Michel told Politico that all leaders of the bloc’s member states were “informed in time of his decision to prevent leaks” — some directly through him, others indirectly. “However, there appears to be clear anger as another EU official claims Michel only actually discussed the situation with Macron and only sent emails to the others, leaving them all baffled,” the Daily Express reports.

– The Member States were not consulted in advance about Michel’s decision – says an anonymous official from Brussels. – Of course, the capitals were not happy about being informed at the same time as the media reported the information – he adds.
