Armed conflict in occupied territories: At least five dead

January 14 was a bloody Sunday in González Catán, in the La Matanza district of Buenos Aires. Members of the Bolivian community in Argentina were the targets of a violent armed attack. There are at least five dead and as many injured.

Videos immortalizing the bloodshed are circulating on social media. In one of them, a group of at least three armed men opened fire on people regardless of the presence of women and children. One of them, quoted in local media, said three men started shooting when they attended a neighborhood meeting. A second video shows about ten people lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.

The incident will be connected to a dispute over the distribution of occupied lands in the La Matanza region, the western region of the capital’s metropolitan area.

All five victims belong to a large community of Bolivian immigrants estimated to number around 850,000 in Buenos Aires alone. In Argentina, the practice of land occupation is widespread in areas surrounding the urbanized area of the metropolis and is supported and directed by criminal groups, often with the complicity of local political sectors.
