At least 18 people died in the explosion at a fireworks factory in Thailand’s Suphanburi province. Rescuers who arrived at the site described to local media an apocalyptic scenario involving a vast pile of debris and bodies and confirmed the number of victims currently identified. The explosion occurred at around 15:00 local time in a remote area in central Thailand, about 120 kilometers from Bangkok. The cause of the accident is not yet clear, as confirmed by the police. As images posted on social media show, the fireworks factory was located in a very isolated rice field: in the photos it is only possible to distinguish all kinds of debris and a large plume of smoke rising from the area.
The accident occurred a month before the Chinese New Year celebration, when there is a huge demand for fireworks. No survivors have been found at the moment, as police colonel Theerapoj Rawangban confirmed: “We are checking the number of victims and the damage to people living in homes or nearby communities.” It is not unusual for secret factories to pop up in Thailand. This is not the first time that a similar accident has occurred where fireworks are thrown. In July last year, a massive explosion occurred at a pyrotechnics warehouse in the south of the country: 10 people died and more than 100 were injured.
