“Globalization has a moral dimension.” The Pope writes to Klaus Schwab

Pope Francis convinces participants at the World Economic Forum to introduce a model of ‘ethical globalization’.

In a letter addressed to Klaus Schwab, chairman of the board of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Pope Francis called for work toward a more ethical globalization, arguing that the process is inevitable.

The Pope wants moral globalism

Every year, the most important politicians and representatives of the most important institutions and sectors come to Davos, Switzerland, to discuss the future of the world.

In a letter signed on January 15, but published two days later by the Vatican press office, Francis wrote that “this year’s meeting of the World Economic Forum is taking place in a very worrying atmosphere of international instability.”

“Your forum, which aims to channel and strengthen political will and mutual cooperation, provides an important opportunity to engage many stakeholders in exploring innovative and effective ways to build a better world,” wrote the Pope.

“I hope that your discussions will take into account the urgent need to promote social cohesion, fraternity and reconciliation between groups, communities and states in order to meet the challenges we face,” Francis said.

The Holy Father believes that in today’s world it is possible to introduce a model of ‘ethical globalization’. As he noted in his letter, the process of globalization, which has led to the interdependence of nations and peoples of the world, therefore has a “fundamentally moral” dimension that must be felt in economic discussions about cultural, political and religious activities that aim to shape the future of the world.

According to the Pope, there is “a clear need for international political action that, through the adoption of coordinated measures, can effectively pursue the goals of world peace and authentic development.”

Concluding his letter, Francis expressed the hope that Forum participants would be aware of the “moral responsibility” that every human being bears in the fight against poverty and the pursuit of peace.
