European Parliament calls for ceasefire in Gaza (but on condition that Hamas disappears)

The European Parliament is divided over the war in Gaza and eventually, thanks to heavy votes from the centre-right, approved the request for a ceasefire in the near future, which appears to support the Israeli government’s plan. Their raids on the Strip will continue indefinitely. According to MEP Massimiliano Smeriglio, it is a “black page” for Strasbourg.

The European Chamber’s resolution calls for an end to the bombings, provided that all hostages are released immediately and unconditionally and the terrorist organization Hamas is disbanded. The addition of these two conditions was introduced by the European People’s Party (of which Forza Italia is a part) and supported by the ECR (Giorgia Meloni’s conservatives), Id sovereignists (League group) and liberals, including Renzian advocate Nicola Danti.

Linking the ceasefire to the dismantling of Hamas essentially amounts to reiterating the position of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhau and is not compatible with what many countries and international organizations such as the UN want, namely an immediate ceasefire to put an end to Hamas. To prevent the loss of lives of innocent civilians and to deliver aid to the people of Gaza who are struggling with a real humanitarian disaster.

In its resolution, we read in a note that the European Parliament condemned “in the strongest terms the despicable terrorist attack carried out by Hamas against Israel.” But he also condemned the “disproportionate Israeli military intervention that caused an unprecedented number of deaths among civilians.”

The MPs underline that Israel has the right to defend itself within the boundaries of international law; This means that all parties to the conflict must always distinguish between combatants and civilians, that attacks must be directed only at military targets, and that civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be attacked.

The text also calls for “full, rapid, safe and unimpeded emergency humanitarian access to the entire Gaza Strip” and “the urgent restoration of vital infrastructure.” It then called for “a European initiative to restart the two-state solution” and underlined the absolute need for an immediate resumption of the peace process. Finally, lawmakers call for an end to the occupation of Palestinian lands and emphasize that Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are illegal under international law. At this point, the Parliament “strongly condemns the increase in violence by extremist settlers against Palestinians” and calls for “the implementation of restrictive EU measures against extremist settlers who violate human rights and international law.”

According to Dem Smeriglio, the decision “dooms the Palestinian civilian population to death, destruction and bombardment until Hamas disintegrates itself and releases all hostages. A position that the EPP, the right, wants and unfortunately also supports many progressives” to make Gaza permanently humanitarian A vote that condemns disaster to indiscriminate violence. “A dark page for Europe,” he concludes.
