Prince Harry has withdrawn his libel case against the Mail on Sunday’s publisher, Associated Newspapers. What angered the prince was an article in Sunday’s edition of the Mail about his legal appeal to the Home Office over changes made to his security team following his decision to step back from royal duties and move to California. The withdrawal of the defamation case occurred just hours before the deadline set by the court, according to the Daily Mail website. The prince, it is specified, may now have to reimburse the £250,000 in legal costs already incurred by the publisher.
Shortly afterwards, a spokesperson for the Sussexes explained that Harry intends to focus on the dispute with the Home Office to ensure his family’s safety while in the UK. In the lawsuit, Harry claimed that the article falsely accused him of “lying” and “cynically” trying to manipulate public opinion. But the editor responded that only “an honest opinion” was expressed, without causing “serious damage” to the prince’s reputation. And now the setback has arrived.
