Steadfast Defender 2024 starts next week. These will be the largest NATO exercises in decades.
According to the official announcement, approximately 90,000 soldiers will be involved in Steadfast Defender 2024. The maneuvers will be carried out simultaneously in various places in Europe.

NATO Supreme Commander Chris Cavali confirmed that the exercises will last from January 22 until the end of May.
“Steadfast Defender 2024 will demonstrate NATO’s ability to rapidly deploy forces from North America and other parts of the alliance to strengthen European defense,” the statement read.
The exercises will be carried out according to specially drawn up “regional plans”. Individual scenarios will be based on detailed defense documents.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the deployment of NATO Rapid Reaction Forces in Poland on the Alliance’s eastern flank.
According to information published by NATO, Steadfast Defender 2024 will include more than 50 ships, from aircraft carriers to destroyers, 80 fighter aircraft, helicopters and drones, at least 1,100 combat vehicles, including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles.
NATO’s signal to the Kremlin
The maneuvers are part of a new training strategy that assumes NATO will conduct two major exercises per year instead of one. The Alliance will also train to counter terrorist threats beyond its immediate borders. NATO representatives say these exercises are also seen as a key element in sending a clear signal to the Kremlin that there is no point in thinking about a possible Russian attack on the Alliance.
