Poland’s neighbor resumes cooperation with Russia and Belarus. ‘Artists cannot suffer’

The Slovak authorities decided to resume cultural cooperation with Russia and Belarus, which they had suspended after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Slovak Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova has revoked the decree suspending cultural cooperation with Russia and Belarus after February 24, 2022, the TASS agency reported, citing the publication of the Slovak newspaper “Pravda”.

– Dozens of armed conflicts are taking place all over the world and in our opinion, artists and culture cannot suffer from this – the minister said through her spokesperson Pavol Corby.

In March 2022, the Slovak Ministry of Culture banned contacts and cooperation with Russia and Belarus. The former head of the Slovak Ministry of Culture, Natalia Milanova, representative of one of the liberal parties that lost power in the country after the last elections, justified her decision by condemning the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine.

The incumbent minister representing the Slovak National Party revoked her predecessor’s decree on January 12. According to press information, the law will no longer apply on January 15.

The Slovak parliament has approved the suspension of military aid to Ukraine

Last November The Slovak parliament approved the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico and its political program, which provides for the suspension of military aid to Ukraine from armed forces resources.

Fico, who announced before September’s elections that if he won, “not a single missile” would reach Ukraine from Slovakia, later softened his position, explaining that the election promise only covered supplies from the Slovak army’s arsenal.

Since the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion, Slovakia has supplied Ukraine with S-300 air defense systems, Mi-17 helicopters, MiG-29 fighter jets, Zuzana 2 self-propelled howitzers, MLRS Grad ammunition and fuel. In total, Bratislava provided Kiev with 13 military aid packages worth 671 million euros.

On November 8, the 14th tranche of 40.3 million euros, drawn up by the previous management of the Ministry of Defense, was blocked. The package contained 4 million 7.62mm bullets; 5,172 ammunition units for 125 mm guns; 140 missiles for the Kub anti-aircraft system; 8 mortars and 1200 mines.
