Sudden landslide left: Dozens of people under rubble

The number of victims is unknown. At least 47 people were buried under the ground in a landslide that occurred on Monday morning in China’s southwestern Yunnan province. State media reported this. Operations to rescue survivors are ongoing in Zhenxiong County, near Zhaotong City. President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive investigation by all possible means.

According to the People’s Daily newspaper, more than 500 people were evacuated from the area after the accident. The accident occurred at 05.51 local time (late Sunday evening in Italy). State broadcaster CCTV confirmed that around 18 houses were destroyed in the crash. The reasons for the accident are unclear.

Videos on local media show rescuers working through collapsed buildings where temperatures are well below freezing. Monday’s disaster occurred in a rural area surrounded by high snow-covered peaks. Temperatures in Zhenxiong hovered around -4°C on Monday morning. Landslides occur frequently in the region. In January 2013, at least 18 people lost their lives due to a landslide in Zhenxiong County.

Heavy rains triggered a similar disaster near the northern city of Xi’an in August, killing more than 20 people, while 19 people died in a landslide in the remote and mountainous southwestern province of Sichuan in June.
