Three Italians died in a helicopter crash in Canada. The three South Tyrolean teenagers were part of a heli-skiing group at Terrace, British Columbia, 700 km northwest of Vancouver, organized by Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, the local helicopter company that ferries skiers to the slopes. The accident occurred on the afternoon of January 22 (at 16:00 local time) when the helicopter crashed in a mountainous area for reasons that are still under investigation. The crash probably occurred due to heavy sleet, which adversely affected visibility during the flight.
There were four other people on board who are currently hospitalized at Mills Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Rescue teams and vehicles coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria arrived at the scene of the accident.
The company is cooperating with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and local authorities who are investigating the causes of the crash. The helicopter that crashed was an Augusta A119 Koala, which can carry up to eight people.
