Israel-Hamas investigation into UN agency officials involved in October 7 attack

Shock inside the UN. UNRWA, the United Nations organization for Palestinian refugees, said it had opened an investigation into the alleged involvement of some of its employees in the October 7 terrorist attack in southern Israel carried out by Hamas. “The Israeli authorities provided UNRWA with information about the alleged involvement of some officials in the horrific attacks against Israel on 7 October. To protect the agency’s ability to provide humanitarian assistance, I have taken the decision to immediately terminate the contracts of these employees and to launch an investigation to establish the truth without delay”, said Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of ‘Unrwa.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, “was informed by the Commissioner General” of UNRWA “about extremely serious allegations involving several UNRWA officials in the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel. The Secretary-General is horrified by this news and has asked Lazzarini to quickly investigate the matter and ensure that any UNRWA employee who participated in or facilitated what happened on 7 October, or in any other criminal activity, is immediately dismissed and detained for potential criminal charge.”

Meanwhile, the US government suspended funding to the agency. The State Department said it was “extremely concerned” about the allegations against UNRWA and has “temporarily suspended additional funding” pending consideration of these allegations “and the steps the United Nations is taking to address them.”
