The circumstances surrounding the Russian Il-76 military transport plane that crashed in the Belgorod region last Wednesday are still not entirely clear. The statement was made by the director of Ukrainian intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, quoted by the «RBC» news agency. Local authorities in Belgorod, on the border with Ukraine, said all 74 people on board the plane were killed, including 65 prisoners of war. Russia accused Ukraine of deliberately shooting down the aircraft. According to Kiev’s version, the plane was carrying missiles. Budanov stated that “so far there is no evidence that there could have been so many people on board the aircraft,” as reported by Moscow.
“The fact is that they did not show the fields covered in corpses, as they could have done to blame Ukraine as much as possible. The fact needs to be clarified. It is not known why Russia hid the corpses, it should have shown them to the whole world,” Budanov said. So far, Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied that its forces shot down the Russian military transport plane, but Ukrainian authorities confirmed earlier this week that a prisoner exchange would take place on Wednesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for an international investigation into the incident, while Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin promised to make the investigation’s findings public.
