UN Agency for Palestine Refugees storms Guterres: “Two million people are at risk without aid”

The storm affecting the UN Organization for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) does not subside. Following accusations that some employees were complicit with Hamas and involved in the October 7 massacre, removing the suspects and launching an investigation was not enough: Following the USA, Italy, Germany, Canada, England, Finland, Australia and the Netherlands decided to freeze the funds they gave to the agency.

UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from United Nations member states, so withholding funding puts its operations at risk. Hence the call by United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, asking donor states to “guarantee the continuity” of the organization. “I understand their concerns, but (I too am appalled by these accusations) I strongly appeal to governments that have suspended their contributions to at least ensure the continuity of UNRWA operations,” Guterres said.

Guterres also declared that the continuation of UNRWA operations “is vital for two million people.” Two million civilians in Gaza depend on UNRWA assistance for their daily survival, but current UNRWA funding will not allow all needs to be met in February. Allegedly, there must be consequences for these employees’ despicable actions. But the tens of thousands of men and women who work for UNRWA, many of whom are in the most dangerous situations for humanitarian workers, should not be punished. its maintenance needs to be covered,” he added.

Guterres later confirmed that 12 UNRWA staff had been affected by “extremely serious allegations” and that they were the subject of an internal UN investigation, as Washington stated. “Any UN employee involved in terrorist acts will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution,” he said, pledging to cooperate with relevant authorities.
