Following Israel’s accusations, more and more countries are suspending UNRWA funding

Members of UNRWA are said to have been involved in organizing Hamas’s attack on Israel. Successive governments have suspended its funding.

Funding for the organization that provides aid to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip has been suspended by: the US, Canada, Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and Finland

UNRWA funding suspended

This is the result of the accusations made by Israel against the organization. According to Israel, members of the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) are believed to have been involved in Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israeli territory on October 7 last year.

On Saturday, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz called for the immediate resignation of UNRWA leadership. He also demanded an immediate investigation into everything that happened in the Gaza Strip in the context of UNRWA’s assistance to Hamas.

Katz wrote on the social networking site

In turn, the head of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, announced that he was “shocked” by the decisions of countries that, as he emphasized, “threaten humanitarian work in the region, and especially in the Gaza Strip.”

“Palestinians in Gaza do not need this additional collective punishment,” Lazzarini wrote on the X platform.

ICJ ruling on Israel

This all happens a few days after the January 26 ruling of the International Court of Justice, in which the ICJ specifically stated that Israel must ensure that IDF soldiers do not commit genocide in the Gaza Strip. It should also prevent and punish any public expressions that could be classified as incitement to genocide, if they occur.

The Court also wants Israel to take action to enable the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Israel also cannot allow the destruction of evidence that could be used in a genocide case. The Court has not ordered a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

However, the decision announced on Friday is provisional in nature, meaning that the Court has not commented on the allegations of genocide. The actions requested by the International Court of Justice on Friday are therefore aimed at ensuring that when judges assess the merits of the allegations in the South African application, Palestinians in Gaza will be able to enjoy some form of protection, it was reported the BBC.

The Court’s decisions are legally binding and final, but cannot be enforced in practice.
