“I want to emphasize two things.” The Pope defends the controversial decision

Pope Francis defends “Fiducia supplicans,” saying that giving a blessing to a same-sex couple is not “about a relationship, but simply about people.”

The Pope spoke about the controversial statement during a meeting with members of the plenary assembly of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which took place on January 26.

The Pope defends the statement

During his speech, Francis spoke about “evangelization” and the sacraments, but at the end of the speech he referred to the controversy surrounding “Fiducia supplicans.” The Pope began to explain that the blessings referred to in the statement do not concern relationships. , but people who create it.

– The purpose of pastoral and spontaneous blessings is to concretely demonstrate the closeness of the Lord and the Church to all those who, finding themselves in different situations, ask for help to continue – and sometimes even start – the path of faith -, he said.

The Pope maintained the arguments made respectively by himself and the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, in the document and in their subsequent commentaries on it, which stated that the blessing of two people of the same sex does not mean that they accept that they live together.

– I would like to briefly emphasize two things: first, these beatitudes, outside of any liturgical context and form, do not require moral perfection; Second, when a couple spontaneously comes forward to ask for it, they are not blessing the relationship, but simply the people who made the request together, the pope said.

He added that it is not about the relationship, but about the people, taking into account context, sensitivity, the places where people live and the most appropriate ways to give the blessing.

The pope’s defense of “Fiducia supplicans” and, by extension, of its author, Cardinal Fernández, comes after widespread opposition to the text from bishops, cardinals and episcopal conferences around the world.
