Pope: The devil always takes away freedom

Pope Francis warns that the devil wants to “chain our souls” and enslave us to many temptations, while “Jesus came to free us from all these chains.”

In his speech after Sunday’s Angelus, the Pope said that “the devil always takes away freedom” and listed some of the temptations the evil spirit uses to deceive us. Francis encouraged people to learn to “say no to evil temptations before they creep into the soul,” invoking the name of Jesus.

– When faced with temptation, do not try to bargain with the devil. We must call on Jesus. Call upon Him where you feel the chains of evil and fear tightening the strongest. There are many chains in our lives, Pope Francis said.

– I mean addictions that enslave and consume energy, goods and feelings. I mean the dominant fashion that pushes us towards impossible perfectionism, consumerism and hedonism, that turns people into commodities and corrupts their relationships. There are other chains too: there are temptations and circumstances that undermine self-esteem, peace of mind and the ability to choose and love life, the Holy Father continued.

“The Idolatry of Power”

Pope Francis added that another chain is “fear,” which forces us to look at the future with pessimism and impatience, always blaming others. to the use of deadly weapons, emotional manipulation or economic injustice.

– And Jesus came to free us from all these chains. Jesus has the power to cast out the devil. Jesus frees us from the power of evil, Pope Francis said.

Pope Francis prayed from the window of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican to the crowds in St. Peter’s Square, praying for peace in Ukraine, Palestine and Israel. He also made an impassioned call for reconciliation in Burma, where three years have passed since the military coup.
