The investigations conducted over the years show that John Jacob Astor IV was wearing the watch when the sinking of the ship began, the tragedy of which occurred on April 15, 1912 after hit an iceberg.

Before the auction, a CNN article indicated that the estimated price could be between 100,000 and 150,000 pounds sterling, which would be an exorbitantly high price compared to what was initially thought.
According to investigation, the watch was recovered from the lifeless body of Astor, who was also wearing two gold cufflinks, a diamond ring that was returned to his wife, cash, his wallet and other items.
As for the clock, it was learned that it had been returned to Vincent, one of his sons, who was responsible for its complete restoration. This piece remained in the family until the mid-1990s, when it was purchased by a collector at auction. Since then it has been on display in various museums around the world.
