They were massacred in Rionegro, Antioquia, and were natives of the coast

Three residents of the town of Bohórquez, in the jurisdiction of Campo de la Cruz, Atlántico, would be among the seven fatalities left by the massacre that took place on the night of this Tuesday, June 25, in a farm in the municipality of Rionegro, in Antioquia.

For now, the fatalities have been identified as Marlon Páez, Luis Guillermo Canoles and Jesús García, all born in the eastern city of the Atlántico department.

Apparently the men were dedicated to masonry and had been under the jurisdiction of the Department of Antioquia for about two months.

The multiple crime took place in the village of Cabeceras, where the bodies of six people were initially found with gunshot wounds, as well as an injured person, who later died.

He Mayor of Rionegro, Jorge Rivaslisted on the social network Security Council “to stop this wave of violence.”

The Army’s Seventh Division, which has jurisdiction over part of Antioquia, said soldiers and police “activated the padlock plan in the surrounding municipalities of the town center of the village of Cabeceras, municipality of Rionegro, to locate those who committed this violent act.”

The number of victims was confirmed around 11 p.m. Tuesday by Colonel Carlos Martínez, commander of the Antioquia police.

According to preliminary information, about ten subjects, carrying long weapons, arrived at the estate: “After the response, the National Police will carry out all technical-scientific activities to provide clarification and contribute to the investigation.”

The government of Antioquia and the authorities in turn offered to do so 50 million pesos to those who provide information about those responsible.

In the same way, an extraordinary security council will be held this Wednesday, convened by the mayor of Rionegro, Jorge Rivas Urrea.

Several 5-56 rifle cartridges were found around the bodies, while the hypothesis is that the murderers, after carrying out the attack, drove towards the neighboring municipality of Carmen de Viboral, aboard a white vehicle and another black color, as well as two motorcycles.

The victims were apparently farm workers.

The massacre comes shortly after President Gustavo Petro reported a supposed decrease in the number of homicides in the country. As of June 24, he cited official figures for 2024, homicides have fallen by 3.9%, with 239 fewer homicides nationwide; 453 municipalities in the country have not registered any homicides, and 17 of the 32 departments have seen a decrease in homicides.

In the same way, he added, the number of murders in robberies has fallen by 32%; seventeen capitals have recorded a decrease in the number of murders; the number of kidnappings has fallen by 37% and in 1,031 municipalities no kidnapping has been registered.
