“For me the biggest difference between a dictatorship and a democracy is that the highest value in a democracy is human life, the protection of human life, the saving of human life. And for those who criticize the decisions of democratic governments to engage in exchanges, to engage in these exchanges with authoritarian regimes like Vladimir Putin’s, I would respectfully invite them to talk not about prisoner exchanges, but about saving human lives.” That was Vladimir Kara-Murza in his first public appearance since his release. Kara-Murza is one of 16 prisoners that Russia and Belarus released on Thursday. A dual Russian and British citizen and a prominent Russian opposition politician, Kara-Murza was arrested in 2022 after criticizing the war in Ukraine. In 2023 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for treason and other charges.
