From its base in Brownsville, Texas, SpaceX conducted the sixth test launch of its new Starship rocket. Founder Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump were present at the test. In previous tests, SpaceX had managed to recapture the rocket’s enormous booster, the ‘Super Heavy’, through mechanisms mounted on the launch pad. On this occasion, a few minutes after takeoff, mission managers aborted the capture of the first stage booster for unspecified reasons and opted for landing in the ocean. The spacecraft flew over the Gulf of Mexico in a near circle around the world, similar to the October test flight. SpaceX plans to use Starship to transport convoys of people to the Moon and Mars. It is also the vehicle that NASA has selected to land American astronauts on the lunar surface as early as 2026.
