Romania’s Constitutional Court has annulled the first round of the presidential elections. The winner was Calin Georgescu, a right-wing candidate who was not wanted by the establishment.
The Romanian Constitutional Court has annulled the first round of the presidential election, which was won by right-wing politician Calin Georgescu, Digi24 television reported. Although the same institution recognized the vote as valid on Monday, it took a different decision on Friday, based on new requests to declare the elections invalid.
Digi24 reports that the documents referred to files released by the Supreme National Defense Council showing that Georgescu-Roegen’s campaign was based on “organized manipulation” from outside Romania. The winner of the first round is described by some Western media as a ‘pro-Russian’ politician.
According to Reuters, the government in Bucharest will now have to set a new date for the elections. Candidates must be resubmitted and verified.
Let us remember that Calin Georgescu, contrary to polls that gave him a score from 4 to 10 percent. support, won the first round of the presidential elections in Romania with a result of 23%. She will face Elena Lasconi, the president of the centre-right Union for the Salvation of Romania (USR).
Who is Calin Georgescu?
Kamil Całus, an expert on Romania at the Center for Oriental Studies, emphasized that Georgescu-Roegen is not an obvious figure. He is a high-level intellectual, official and academic teacher. He is an agricultural engineer by training and teaches at the Technical University of Bucharest. As a representative of Romania, he worked at the UN, where he dealt with agricultural issues.
He entered politics when the right-wing Unity Party of the Union of Romanians proposed him as a potential candidate for prime minister. Later they diverged and he took part in the presidential elections as an independent candidate, expressing a protest vote and using, among other things: the fact that society has had enough of the Romanian political class.
Romania’s interests are a priority
Całus explained that Georgescu-Roegen’s position is that he puts the interests of the Romanian nation above the interests of Russia, the US and Ukraine. – He sees the Russian-Ukrainian conflict as a Russian-Ukrainian conflict, in which Romania must not become involved and must remain neutral. […] Georgescu-Roegen has repeatedly emphasized that Romania is in a great geographical location: the country can work with anyone. He often referred to Hungary, which he believes has the best diplomacy in the world under Orban, an OSW analyst said.
NATO, Russian-Ukrainian war
Georgescu-Roegen insists that it is good that Romania is in NATO, but claims that the Alliance will not defend it against Russia because the Americans will not die for Bucharest. That is why Romania must remain neutral and also talk to the Russians.
In one of his statements, he expressed the opinion that the conflict in Ukraine is actually being fought not in the interests of nations, but in the interests of big business, including the arms industry.
The Romanian presidential candidate believes that the ongoing war should be ended through diplomatic channels. – There is no reason for us to talk about war all the time, we must ensure peace, without peace we cannot build anything – he emphasizes.
Conservative, anti-globalization views
Georgescu-Roegen has conservative views. It emphasizes the value of tradition, Romanian culture, social ties, and criticizes globalism. – He presents himself as a person with traditional, conservative, nationalist views, close to Romanian Orthodoxy, but also anti-globalization – said Całus.
