An outrageous act of vandalism. Home Army monuments in Russia destroyed

Monuments commemorating Home Army soldiers were destroyed in Russia’s Novgorod Oblast. There is a statement from the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland.

The destruction took place at the memorial site for Home Army soldiers in the town of Borowicze-Jogła in Russia’s Novgorod Oblast.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in St. Petersburg issued a statement. “We regret to inform you that we have received sad news about the destruction of a complex of monuments commemorating soldiers of the Polish Home Army in the city of Borowicze-Jogła (Novgorod Oblast). Three places were destroyed, a few kilometers away located apart – Catholic and Polish cemeteries of Poles who died in Soviet labor camps,” it was reported.

Monuments to Polish heroes were destroyed

The Polish diplomatic mission recalled that during the Second World War and after the war, representatives of many nationalities were sent to NKVD labor camps in the Borowicz region. In November 1944, as part of the crackdown on the structures of the Polish underground state, almost 5,000 people were deported. people were considered “enemies of the people’s power”, mainly soldiers of the Home Army, imprisoned in Sokołów Podlaski, Lublin and Przemyśl. In the years 1944-1946, in the camp complex No. 270 Borowicze, one of the largest and toughest labor camps in the northwestern USSR, more than 600 Poles died of hunger, disease or exhaustion and were buried in unmarked graves. This year marks the 80th anniversary of these crimes.

“Polish commemorative signs were placed in 1993-2004 thanks to the efforts of the Borowicze community, the Warsaw Council for the Protection of the Memory of Struggle and Martyrdom and the local administration. It was the only almost completely memorialized camp complex in Russia, often visited by representatives of the Polish Embassy in Moscow and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland,” we read in the message from the Consulate of the Republic of Poland on Facebook.
