ABC will pay $15 million for defaming Donald Trump. This is the result of a lie told on air by the channel’s main presenter.
The case is related to the events of March this year. It was then that leading ABC host George Stephanopoulos gave false information on the live program “This Week” that Donald Trump had been found guilty of the rape of writer E. Jean Carroll.
ABC will pay Trump $15 million for defamation
On Saturday, the channel announced a settlement with the newly elected president, in which he would pay $15 million in compensation. This money will go as a charitable donation to Trump’s planned presidential library. In a statement, the ABC expressed regret over its journalist’s comments.
The network will also pay $1 million to cover the costs of Trump’s attorney Alejandro Brito’s law firm.
Carrol vs Trump case. “It’s pure fraud”
In filing the lawsuit, Carroll alleged that the businessman assaulted her in a Manhattan department store. She and Trump reportedly bumped into each other while shopping. The politician then allegedly asked her for advice on buying underwear for another woman and jokingly encouraged her to model for him. While Carroll was in the locker room, the real estate mogul lunged at her, pinned her against a wall and attacked her. The woman claims she was able to push him away after a ‘colossal struggle’. At the time, she did not report the alleged incident to police because “she was in shock and did not want to consider herself a rape victim.”
Trump has repeatedly denied these allegations; Carroll first accused him of rape in 2019. On her social media platform Truth Social, the former president wrote that her story was a “complete hoax” and that the alleged rape “never happened.” Trump responded that she made up for the publicity.
In the first trial, the court ruled that Trump had not raped Carroll but had sexually assaulted her and defamed her in 2022 when he denied her allegations and discredited her. The jury subsequently awarded the writer $5 million in damages. In January this year, a federal jury in Manhattan, New York, decided that Trump had to pay Carroll $83.3 million. The politician appealed against both rulings.
