Kirillov was the head of the army’s radiological, chemical and biological forces. The ambush took place in front of an apartment building about 7 km southeast of the Kremlin. Investigators and forensic experts are working in the area along with other emergency service operators, Russian news agency Tass reported. Investigations are ongoing to determine the “full circumstances” of the crash. Kirillov was sanctioned by the United Kingdom last October for “barbaric deployment of chemical weapons in Ukraine”.
Kirillov had been sanctioned by the UK and US for allegedly using chemical weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine, and just a day before the attack, on December 16, the Ukrainian Security Service SBU had accused the general of using banned chemical weapons.
