Congo, the case of the mysterious disease solved: that’s what it’s all about

The mysterious disease that affects Congo and worries the rest of the world is actually “a serious form of malaria”. This was clarified by the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as reported by Reuters. The disease, which causes fevers and hemorrhages, is circulating in the Panzi health zone, and by November it had killed 143 people in the province of Cuango, in the southwest of the country. «The mystery has finally been solved. This is a case of severe malaria in the form of a respiratory disease, aggravated by malnutrition,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement. Health authorities also explained that 592 cases have been reported since October, with a mortality rate of 6.2%.

Just today, the 55-year-old person who recently returned from a trip to Congo, resident in Trevignano (in the province of Treviso), died and had symptoms related to the disease that affects the African country. The announcement was made by the Veneto Region, explaining that diagnostic tests are underway that will clarify the etiology of the disease, in collaboration with the Integral Institute «Lazzaro Spallanzani» in Rome. Pending diagnostic tests, the public health measures planned for these cases were promptly activated, in agreement with the Ministry of Health, the Spallanzani Institute and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. The planned protocol was activated, also providing fiduciary home isolation for the only known contact and initiating corresponding health surveillance.
