Minister: It is likely that Ukraine is not aware of this

Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliniak said it is in his country’s interest to immediately end the war between Russia and Ukraine.

There is an ongoing dispute between the authorities of Slovakia and Ukraine. It concerns the supply of raw materials necessary for the functioning of states and societies, which were struggling after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this context, the most important thing is the end of military operations between Kiev and Moscow. The war has lasted 1,040 days and there are no indications that either side will be able to achieve all their basic goals.

In Slovakia’s interests: an immediate end to the war

In an interview with TA3 Television, Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliniak pointed out that the situation on the front does not indicate that Ukraine will be able to regain the territories occupied by Russia.

Kaliniak noted that it is in Slovakia’s interest to immediately end the war and establish a ceasefire between the parties to the conflict, which would in turn allow further peace negotiations. The minister emphasized that the most important thing is what form post-war Ukraine will take.

It is entirely possible that Ukraine does not realize that it will never be able to find itself between Germany and Switzerland, but that it will always share its longest border with the Russian Federation. You cannot argue who is the aggressor, because Russia has crossed all borders and rules and violated international law, but you must pay the same attention to what is happening in other parts of the world and apply the same standards to all other disputes – said him during Kalinak talks.

In October, before flying to Brussels for the summit of European Union leaders, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he was very sorry but that Ukraine would likely fall victim to major powers. – for now they are mocking Ukraine, they are fighting to the last Ukrainian soldier – he said then.

Dispute between the authorities of Slovakia and Ukraine. Fico warns Kiev

Let us not forget that Prime Minister Fico has warned that Slovakia may suspend electricity supplies to Ukraine after January 1, 2025. This is in response to Kiev’s decision not to expand gas transit through its territory, which will harm Slovakia, Hungary and Austria.

Reacting to the announcement of the head of the Slovak government, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Vladimir Putin ordered Fico to open a “second energy front against Ukraine.”

– The need to import electricity through Ukraine arose solely in connection with the Russian occupation of our nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye and the deliberate destruction by Russian missiles and drones of a significant part of Ukraine’s thermal and water energy production, Zelensky said.

Relations between the governments in Kiev and Bratislava over the supply of raw materials have been tense for some time. In July, Prime Minister Fico asked Ukrainian authorities not to block Russian oil deliveries to Slovakia. Kiev subsequently placed the Russian company Lukoil on the sanctions list. The problem is that the Slovnaft refinery in Bratislava received oil from it.
