Indian cop arrested for raping 13-year-old girl

A police officer has been arrested on suspicion of raping a 13-year-old girl in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He was only there to report a gang rape.

The girl belongs to the lowest class of the Indian caste system, called ‘dalites’, a group that is heavily discriminated against. She was raped on April 22 after kidnapping four boys and taking them to a neighboring country.

The girl managed to escape and reached the police station in rural Lalitpur, about 580 kilometers south of the capital New Delhi. There she was raped again on April 27.

A senior police officer told Reuters news agency that the victim had been taken to hospital. “Severe measures will be taken against those found guilty,” he said.

Politicians and activists demand action to protect women. Rape is common in India, including among young victims. A politician from the largest opposition party asked: “If the police are not safe for women, where should they file a report?” he asked.

A few years before the death penalty was introduced for raping girls under the age of 12, a young woman was gang raped on a moving bus. This sparked nationwide outrage, but attacks on women remained high.

The latest crime figures show that nearly 32,000 reported rape or attempted rape in 2020.
