A record number of 520 deer were shot on the roads of Flevoland last year. Staatsbosbeheer explains that the deer population in this state must therefore be significantly reduced.
“In practice, there will be more because not all collisions are reported and injured animals can stumble and disappear in the forest,” said a spokesman for Staatsbosbeheer.
The conservation organization says the number of collisions with wildlife should be drastically reduced, because collisions also pose a danger to road users.
Numerous collisions in and around Almere
Omroep Flevoland writes that 20% of collisions with deer take place in and around Almere. According to ranger Amy Zeeman, this is due to the growth of the city. Forests are surrounded by neighborhoods and roads, and the deer have nowhere to go. “The habitat of deer is drastically declining,” he says.
Therefore, the population must be adjusted. The state determines how many deer must be culled in Flevoland.
About 8,000 deer, roe deer and wild boars are killed in the Netherlands every year. In summer, the chance of collisions with wild animals is greater.
