In the previous elections, the difference between the two parties was only 0.1%. According to reports in the British media, it should be clear by Saturday at the latest what the current result means for the distribution of seats.
Sinn Féin has long had close ties to the IRA, a movement that has fought hard to join Ireland. Party leader Michelle O’Neill described the win as a “historic achievement” and said she would focus on rising living and health care costs.
