Defense Minister Ollongren and his German counterpart Lambrecht visited a German-Dutch unit in Slovakia. German and Dutch soldiers occupied a base under NATO flag for three weeks with Patriot anti-aircraft guns.
The request for support to the eastern flank of NATO territory was made because of the deterioration of the security situation in Europe since the war in Ukraine, a neighboring country to Slovakia. “We’re doing the right thing,” says Ollongren. “The Netherlands is already militarily active in Lithuania, Bulgaria and now also here in Slovakia. Soon we will send troops to Romania. That is why we provide Ukraine with heavy artillery, five howitzers.”
Shortly after his appointment to the Ministry of Defense, Ollongren says the war had forced him to “go quickly into crisis mode”. At the same rate of crisis, 120 Dutch soldiers stationed in Sliac, Slovakia, are setting up camp. To the left of the vast tract of land compressed by the Tatras is the Patriot Fire Department.
A Patriot missile tracks a target and intercepts it using an electronically controlled radar beam. With the armament, aircraft, helicopters and high-speed ballistic and cruise missiles can be destroyed at an altitude of 20 kilometers and at a distance of 60 kilometers. “We can stop anything that flies here,” said Private Rob Huurman, who works for the unit.
