British Foreign Secretary Truss wants to abolish Northern Ireland’s special status in the EU, according to British newspaper The Times. Truss would not be convinced that a deal has been struck with the EU on a Brexit deal.
According to the newspaper, a bill has been drafted that will unilaterally abolish mandatory customs controls for goods shipped from England to Northern Ireland.
Also, companies in Northern Ireland no longer have to comply with EU regulations and the European Court of Justice is no longer allowed to rule in Northern Ireland-related cases.
It was agreed that if the British left the EU, Northern Ireland would remain part of the European single market. New customs controls at the border with the Republic of Ireland would violate the 1998 peace agreement that ended violence in Northern Ireland.
Last weekend, Sinn Féin, the former political wing of the IRA, became the largest party in Northern Ireland’s elections. Irish nationalists fight for a reunited Ireland.
