The official Palestinian news agency, citing the health ministry, reported that another journalist, Ali al-Samod, who was also wearing a protective vest, was shot in the back. His condition was not immediately clear. He works for the Jerusalem-based Quds newspaper, Al Jazeera reports.
“It is very sad to hear of the death of American and Palestinian journalist Shirin Abu Akleh,” Thomas R. Nides, the US ambassador to Israel, said on Twitter. “I call for a full investigation into the circumstances of his death and the injury of another journalist in Jenin today.”
Following a series of Palestinian attacks on Israel, the Israeli military has been conducting regular military raids on the Palestinian city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank since early April.
The Israeli military said on Twitter that its troops were present in Jenin to arrest and mainly attack the suspects.
