In recent years, the NCOI Education Institute has awarded students a master’s degree without an official master’s degree, thereby breaking the law. Trouw reported that the education inspectorate scolded the private school for this.
According to a report by the inspectorate, 500 students have obtained illegal diplomas in the past four years. Students were not properly informed by the NCOI about the value of their diploma.
NCOI is the largest private educator in the Netherlands. These include the LOI training institute, the secretary-trainer Schoevers and the Lycée Luzac. NCOI also offers officially recognized HBO courses, but the offer mainly consists of short courses that are not officially recognised. The Education Inspectorate says courses and official courses are mixed on the NCOI website, which is confusing.
Application issues
Incorrectly awarded diplomas belong to “masters” and “professional masters”. NCOI degrees are referred to as “masters” but are not officially recognized as such.
In recent years, five different NCOI instructors have awarded true non-master degrees.
Students may have difficulty applying if their degree is not officially recognised.
“Inspection invents its own standards”
The NCOI told Trouw that the inspection’s findings were “unnecessary, without legal basis and even against the law”. The legislation on diplomas is not clear, explains the pedagogical institute.
NCOI also says the inspectorate sets its own standards.
