Number of new corona infections increases for the fifth day in a row

The number of new corona cases has risen for the fifth day in a row. RIVM announced today that 68,345 new positive tests have been reported in the past 24 hours. This is the highest number of new positive tests since February 12, when 70,410 positive tests were reported.

According to GGD GHOR Nederland, the increase is probably due to a combination of carnival, the return of winter sports enthusiasts and relaxation.

GGDs have been reporting an increase in the number of test setups across the country since Monday. On Monday, the number of test setups was stable or declining. Further test agreements have been signed in Groningen. According to GGD GHOR spokesperson Jacqueline Toonen, this is mainly because the spring break in the north of the country starts earlier and ends earlier.

“Since Sunday, February 27 (end of spring break in the north, editors’ note), we have seen an increase in the demand for testing from travelers returning to northern regions. We expect this to decline steadily in the northern regions by mid-week. 9 at the spring break level.”

The government took the recovery into account

Since Tuesday, the number of test setups in the south of the country has also increased sharply. The holiday period for the center and south of the country ends on Sunday.

The government has already taken into account the revival of the corona virus by relaxing the corona rules. That’s why people 70 and older can get a new booster vaccine from today.

“It won’t take long”

Alma Tostmann, epidemiologist at Radboudumc, is also not surprised by the increase in the number of infections. “We expected this. Over the past two days you have seen the numbers increase, especially because of the people in the south who are celebrating Carnival.”

“After the incubation period, you now see these infections on the test line and see them again in the hospital,” he says. “People around me don’t expect it to last long. Carnival has such a contact density that you can’t compare it in normal life.”

Fewer patients in hospitals

The number of corona patients in hospitals has fallen again last month. This allows all hospitals to perform planned care such as hip, knee and cataract operations again, according to the accessibility tracker of the Dutch Health Service (NZa).
