Paraguayan prosecutor Marcelo Pecci has been murdered in Colombia. He and his wife, Paraguayan journalist Claudia Aguilera, honeymooned on an island near the northern city of Cartagena. Aguilera announced earlier today on Instagram that she is pregnant.

Two gunmen arrived on a jet ski. Pecci and his wife were lying on a private beach next to their hotel. They had security. Only Pecci was shot, his wife and bodyguards unharmed. According to Aguilera, there are no known threats against her husband.

As a prosecutor, Pecci mainly tackles organized crime and specializes in money laundering and drug cases. He led the investigation into the murder of a governor’s daughter, and… Operativo A Ultranza PYParaguay’s largest drug trafficking investigation ever. Pecci has also sued former Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho. In 2020, he and his brother were held in Paraguay for nearly six months for entering the country with false documents.

“All of Paraguay is in mourning”

In Paraguay, Pecci is known as one of the few honest prosecutors. Corruption is a major problem in the country, which is one of the largest cannabis producers and one of the main transit ports for Bolivian cocaine to Europe. In that sense, Rotterdam is an important destination.

Paraguayan police are on the scene to investigate the murder. Colombia has also asked the United States to help with the investigation.

Colombian President Duque and Paraguayan President Abdo reacted with disgust at the assassination. “All of Paraguay mourns this cowardly murder,” Abdo said. “We condemn this tragic event in the strongest possible terms and redouble our commitment to the fight against organized crime.
