Al Jazeera speaks of ‘brutal murder’ of journalist Shireen

Shireen Abu Aqla reported that Israeli troops attacked the Jenin refugee camp this morning when it was shelled.

According to Al Jazeera, he was attacked while performing his duties as a journalist, “wearing a jacket that clearly identifies him as a journalist.” He was shot in the head, according to Palestinian authorities.

A photographer from the French news agency AFP was on the scene when Abu Akleh died. He confirmed that the 51-year-old woman had been shot dead by Israeli soldiers and reported that she was wearing a press vest.

“Al Jazeera condemns this heinous crime, which aims only to prevent the media from fulfilling their mandate,” the statement said.

In the images below you can hear the images being taken and Shireen’s body can be seen as well. These images can be experienced as shocking:

‘On purpose’

The channel holds the Israeli government and occupation forces responsible for the killing and urges the international community to condemn and hold Israel responsible for “deliberately attacking and killing Shireen”.

Shireen joined Al Jazeera in 1997 and had only been around for a year. He has been a familiar face on the station for over 20 years, as he regularly reports on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“It was a very familiar face,” said Abdou Bouzerda. As a correspondent for the radio program of VPRO Bureau Buitenland, he always followed his news closely.

Bouzerda said, “I have nothing to say about it. It touches me greatly,” she says. “As a Palestinian woman, I have a lot of respect for her story. He was moved by the events surrounding the conflict with Israel, but he always remained professional. He always said: “There is no point in talking about to talk to me.”

“He always kept doing his job”

You know that your job as a journalist is not without risk, says Bouzerda. “He continued to do his job even when his colleagues around him died.”

Colleagues remember him as a kind and humble person. “He was a great journalist,” Al Jazeera host Dena Takruri tweeted. “He was highly respected in Palestine and in the Arab world. I can’t believe you’re gone.”

In addition to the journalist, an Al Jazeera producer was also affected. This employee, Ali Al-Samudi, was shot in the back. He is being treated in hospital. How he got out of it is unknown.

Al Jazeera promises those close to the journalist that they will bring the perpetrators to justice “no matter how hard they try to cover up their crimes”.

Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra also said: be in shock with “tragic death”. “The freedom of the press and the security of journalists are essential for free and democratic societies. All over the world. The facts and circumstances must be investigated.”

for research

The Israeli authorities contradict the reading that the journalist was killed by Israeli fire. “Based on the information we have, it seems likely that armed Palestinians who opened fire indiscriminately were responsible for the journalist’s accidental death,” Prime Minister Bennett said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has offered to launch a joint investigation with the Palestinian authorities.

According to Tom Nides, the US ambassador to Israel, the woman had Palestinian and US citizenship. “I encourage a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and injury of at least one journalist in Jenin today,” he tweeted.

Israel has conducted numerous raids on the West Bank in recent weeks. Israel conquered the area in 1967 and has occupied it ever since.
