That is what CDA MP Inge van Dijk suggested during a discussion about the European billions and the plans of the Netherlands in this area. He points to the United States, where the government has launched a cheaper internet program for the lowest incomes. Van Dijk calls internet access ‘an important basic facility for involving people’.
He asks Finance Minister Sigrid Kaag to advocate in Europe for free internet access for people with a small wallet. But at the request of PvdA member Henk Nijboer, Van Dijk said that he would like the Netherlands to include such a proposal in their plans.
The CDA fears that the Dutch plans for digitization will not reduce inequalities, but increase them without “laying the foundation”. Ziggo and KPN recently announced further price increases for internet subscriptions.
