Morocco’s autonomy plan has recently received increased international support. Donald Trump expressed his support for him in his final days as president of the United States in 2020. It also acknowledged the North African country’s claim to the disputed territory. In return, Morocco established diplomatic relations with Israel.
In March, Spain also sided with Morocco. This was a remarkable move, as until then Spain had always been vehemently opposed to the controversial invasion of Morocco by the former Spanish colony. Prime Minister Sanchez described this as a new phase in relations between the two countries “based on mutual respect”.
‘hypocrisy’
Polisario reacted angrily to Spain’s return. The resolution stated that the Spanish government had succumbed to “blackmail and manipulation”. Polisario also said it is hypocritical that violation of international law is on the agenda in Ukraine, but not in Western Sahara.
The Netherlands is now part of the growing list of countries that support the autonomy plan. Polisario has not yet responded.
Hoekstra met his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in Marrakech today. Discussions focused on a common approach to terrorism, but immigration, trade and culture were also on the agenda.
