Finnish leaders aim for NATO membership, Swedish position expected soon

It took years for some countries to join NATO, but Finland and Sweden can act quickly. “Countries must meet a number of requirements to be eligible,” says political journalist Fons Lambie. “In the democratic field, among other things, in the military field. But there are no obstacles here.”

Lambie says both countries are already members of the European Union and already work closely with NATO countries. “Ministers from Finland and Sweden have already attended sessions of some NATO foreign ministers as guests. Joint military exercises are also held and their military capabilities are known.”

hurry

An important condition is that the parliaments of thirty NATO countries unanimously approve the new members. This can sometimes take a while, but it can also go quickly if necessary. The Dutch cabinet sent a letter to the House of Representatives this week with the agenda for the NATO ministerial meeting this weekend in Berlin. The cabinet asks the House of Representatives to hurry up a bit in time.
