US visit is recognition of Maduro: Russian ambassador to Venezuela

The Russian ambassador to Venezuela, Sergey Mélik-Bagdasárov, assured this Sunday that the visit of a delegation of the United States government to Caracas last weekend is an “acknowledgment” of President Nicolás Maduro and “his wrong policy” Caribbean country.

“We consider this trip of the United States delegation as a sign (…) that they have recognized their wrong policies towards Venezuela,” the Russian official said in an interview granted to the Venezuelan culture minister, Ernesto Villegas and today was broadcast by the state broadcaster VTV.

For Mélik-Bagdasárov “this rapprochement that they (US) are now proposing to buy oil or I don’t know what they are doing here, to ask for freedom for the prisoners, is the proof that they have now learned that there is only one government here “.

The White House on Monday, March 7, confirmed the trip of a high-level US delegation to Caracas the weekend before.

The aim was to hold meetings with the Maduro Executive on “energy security” and discuss the situation of the six former directors of Citgo (a subsidiary of Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA) held in Venezuela, one of whom has already been released, after the meeting between this delegation and the Venezuelan president.

In that sense, the Russian ambassador to Venezuela assured that it is necessary to treat Venezuela with respect and that the United States’ rapprochement with the Caribbean country “is proof of correcting its own mistakes”.

“They recognize their mistakes and try to correct them. It’s good, I hope they learn it with us over time too,” he said.

In addition, the Russian official thanked the Venezuelan government’s support for Russia after the invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24.

“We appreciate it very much and we thank the government and people of Venezuela for their important support to my country,” he said.
