Tehran, Iran – State media reported that the Emir of Qatar arrived in Iran on Thursday to meet with the Iranian president and efforts to save Tehran’s damaged nuclear deal have stalled with world powers.
State television showed that Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani arrived at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport, where he was met by Iranian Vice President Mohammad Mokhber. The report states that bilateral, regional and international issues are on the visit’s agenda.
Emir will meet with President Ibrahim Rice in the afternoon.
The official visit comes when the EU coordinator trying to revive the nuclear deal is still in Iran.
Negotiations in Vienna have been stalled for months, apparently due to Iran’s demand for Washington to downgrade Iran’s powerful paramilitary revolutionary guards as terrorists.
Enrique Mora met with an Iranian nuclear negotiator on Wednesday to take a diplomatic step forward, shortly after Iranian intelligence announced the arrest of two unidentified European citizens. Iranian media reported that talks resumed on Thursday, without providing further details.
Qatar hosted Iranian President Ebrahim Rice in February. Despite its small size, the Small Gulf Arab Sheikhdom plays a strategic role as a silent mediator and negotiator in a region full of sectarian and political conflicts. Qatar’s ties with Washington and Tehran allow Doha to convey a perspective between the two.
