Finnish political leaders want to join NATO, Russia sees it as a threat

President Niinisto and Finnish Prime Minister Marin are in favor of their countries joining NATO. According to both, the country must apply “immediately” to join the military alliance. On Tuesday, the defense committee of the Finnish parliament said NATO membership was the best option to ensure national security.

Niinisto and Marin hope that NATO membership decisions will be made at the national level within days. Then come the NATO countries, which have to decide on Finland’s membership. A NATO summit will be held in June to discuss membership. Sweden can also be a member. This country is strongly considering joining.

It is not known exactly how long the negotiations will last, but Finland’s official membership should take place between a few months and a year. The parliaments of the thirty NATO member states must agree. NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said Finns would be given a “warm welcome”. “The membership process will be smooth and fast.”

Russia is not happy with the plans and says they pose a threat to the Russians. A Kremlin spokesman said expanding the military alliance certainly does not make Europe or the world any safer.

Finland has been preparing for all possible disaster scenarios in various ways for years:
