Utrecht gets small asylum: ‘Better for integration’

After tough negotiations with the Central Asylum for Asylum Seekers (COA), Utrecht has succeeded: the city will have a small center for asylum seekers, with shelter for young people and money to give courses to asylum seekers and local residents.

“The COA was not open to that in the past, but now the need is great and the COA is with us,” says alderman Utrecht Streefland (CU), who has asylum in his portfolio.

COA will need several thousand new locations in the coming months. These are preferably larger places where asylum seekers can stay for several years. In other words: not the gyms now used due to the current high pressure on the asylum system. And in the past, according to Utrecht, COA was also wary of relatively small locations.

Einstein card

The municipality of Utrecht recently sent a proposal to COA. The municipality explained how it wants to accommodate 300 asylum seekers and also create living space for 60 Utrecht youngsters. Utrecht also asked 800,000 euros per year for the so-called “Einstein Plan”, in which tuition fees must be paid for asylum seekers and local residents. The money will go to courses in English, embroidery and entrepreneurship to promote integration, among other things.

COA has been given a weekend to respond to the proposal of the municipality of Utrecht, otherwise the municipality will use the space reserved for the reception of Ukrainians. COA later adopted Utrecht’s plan.

Childcare is also organized in ‘Plan Einstein’:
