Why is Russia afraid of Finland joining NATO?

In conversations with EL HERALDO, the internationalist Mauricio Jaramillo noted that there is a change in the foreign policy landscape between Russia and Finland.

According to the expert, Finland’s accession to NATO means that the country is abandoning a decades-long tradition of neutrality because of the visible vulnerability of this and other European countries, such as Ukraine, to the Russian threat.

Moreover, an aggravating factor for this situation is that the western United States is sticking to their stance to “continue to finance the war in Ukraine”, which not only alarms the Kremlin, but also puts it in a defensive position, which interference and a direct threat to its military and geopolitical power.

“Initially they provided all kinds of defensive and offensive weapons. Second, there has been talk of strengthening the defenses of potentially vulnerable countries,” he said.

The specialist ensures that, with the intervention of Russia in UkraineFinland is in great danger —the same one Ukraine– that is why the Scandinavian country is reviewing its policies, aligning interests and planning to get out of the isolation of the war.

The Finnish accession, which will most likely be formalized at the Allied summit in June in Madridwould double Russia’s border with the Atlantic Alliance.

Russia, which shares some 1,300 kilometers of border with the Scandinavian country, now has a border with Poland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuanianext to 49 kilometers of sea border with the United States.

Jaramillo added that “the above reconfigures the new political map of Europe and a possibility of a permanent confrontation with Russia. Change F .’s Foreign Policyinland, Sweden, Romania and Germanywho are the ones who are afraid of reprisals that the Kremlin may take in military affairs”.
