NEW DELHI – A massive fire broke out Friday night in a four-story commercial building in the Indian capital, killing at least 27 people and injuring many, according to the fire department control room.

The control room said dozens of people had been evacuated from the building, where most of the shops are located. The building is located in the Mundka district in West New Delhi.

The Indian news agency Press Trust of India reported that 12 people were burned and 50 people were evacuated from the building due to the fire.

Twenty-seven fire engines put out the fire after more than five hours of fighting. Firefighters said search efforts continue to search for people found in the rubble.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known.

“I am saddened by the tragic fire in the building near the Mundka metro station in Delhi. My condolences to the families of the victims. Indian President Ram Nat Quind said on Twitter: “I wish the wounded a speedy recovery.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was extremely saddened by the loss of people.

Fires are common in India, where building laws and safety regulations are often ignored by builders and residents.

Delhi fire chief Atul Garg said the building had not received permission from the fire brigade and was not equipped with fire fighting equipment such as fire extinguishers.

The injured occurred on the second floor of the building, where the flammable plastic material used in the construction of the security cameras was stored.

The Indian Express newspaper reported that two owners of a company that sells security cameras were arrested for questioning after a fire broke out in their office. There was no immediate confirmation from the police.

In 2019, 43 people died in a building in New Delhi due to a short circuit fire in New Delhi.
