Rutte and Kaag do not beg, but need resistance (column)

If you are in the cabinet, it is your job to make proposals that can count on the support of the majority in parliament. That is exactly the task that the House of Representatives entrusts to an informer who investigates the formation of a cabinet. After the last election, “majority support” was not so simple. The majority eventually came to the House of Representatives, not to the First House.

So Rutte gets to work to lure some of the opposition to his side. It doesn’t bother him: he was already cutting with this axe. At the time, for example, he convinced Jolande Sap (GL) to participate in his training mission in Afghanistan, which got him into serious trouble and brought the party into a stalemate. And Kees van der Staaij (SGP) has been ‘updated’ in the back seat of Rutte’s official car. The Catshuis consultation, where decisions would be made about further reductions, has not been discussed, according to the Prime Minister.

It’s not that special. This is part of the task of a cabinet that cannot boast of a majority in both Houses. But Rutte is in a rather luxurious position: she can choose between left and right. The cabinet will therefore not negotiate, but will take into account the wishes of the opposition. Then see who can best be helped.
