Animal pornography and racism: this is why cops in your area have been fired

The investigative editors of RTL Nieuws have requested data from the police via the Public Access Act (WOB) about the reasons for the dismissal of agents in the past two years.

In total, this concerns 239 representatives, of whom 119 were irrevocably dismissed. He was given 117 parolees and a second chance. Three officers were fired on their own initiative.

Police shared child and animal pornography

The police in the Northern Netherlands were seriously ashamed when they discovered a Whatsapp group called ‘Viesterds’ on a police officer’s phone in 2020. Group apps include 18 police officers and shared images of child and animal pornography.

One of the officers was fired, in part for leaking information to police. The remaining 12 bailiffs were given a warning and two were punished for negligence.

Relatively speaking, Limburg has the most civil servants fired: twenty civil servants out of a workforce of approximately 3,000. This means that twice as many officers have been dismissed in Limburg as, for example, units in The Hague and the eastern Netherlands. Thefts, obscene acts and leaks of confidential information were discovered among Limburg agents.

Gift for clearing police report

A Limburg police officer was recently fired for removing an official report from the police system at the request of an acquaintance and as a gift.

The man also had unwanted contact with criminals and was active in a Whatsapp group that, according to the police, shared extremely racist, discriminatory and hurtful images.

Smuggling for drugs

An agent in the east of the Netherlands was arrested at his home in 2020 after his name was revealed by criminals in an encrypted message investigation. He leaked over 300 classified information to the underworld in exchange for drugs. The agent was suspected of corruption, breach of professional secrecy and computer hacking.

Pending the criminal case, the police have launched an internal investigation. On the basis of this, the man was imposed the most severe sanction: unconditional dismissal.

Medicines

Over the past two years, more than 50 officers have been released on parole or unconditionally for drug use and abuse. 24 agents were involved in the use or purchase of drugs. One officer was released on parole for using nitrous oxide.

Twenty officers were reprimanded with the maximum penalty for drink-driving. One of them was caught on his way to work. Four other colleagues were (conditionally) fired for working under the influence of alcohol. For the other three officers, the reason for the discharge was alcohol abuse.

The agent has an example function

According to the police, honesty is “the foundation of good police work”. Representatives have an exemplary role and must demonstrate this both on and off the job. They should also avoid being blackmailed.

A labor law has been drawn up for this and the police take an oath when they take office. When agents do not act with integrity, this can lead to a sanction. Discharge is the most serious form.
