Knife attack on train Herzogenrath near Kerkrade

Five people, including the attacker, were injured in a knife attack on a train just across the border in Kerkrade. German police said the man who stabbed him was neutralized and arrested by a police officer, who was on the loose and on the train.

It happened around 7:40 am this morning when there were about 270 passengers on the train. Authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia reported that the suspect was a 31-year-old Iraqi-born man. It is currently unclear what nationality the man is.

The wounded survived the danger. They have cuts on their faces and hands. One has a stab wound. It is not yet known whether there were Dutch people on the train.

random attack

According to Reul, Secretary of State for North Rhine-Westphalia, there is a good chance that it was a random attack. The victim and the aggressor do not know each other. “It was a brutal act that could have been stopped with an act of extraordinary courage,” Reul said at a news conference.

Reul said the suspect has been known to authorities as a conservative Muslim since 2017. Police are investigating whether the man had a religious motive.
