Dutch investigation confirms death of Rwandan genocide suspect

It turned out that a Rwandan, wanted since 2000 for his involvement in the 1994 genocide, died fifteen years ago in Zimbabwe. This is apparent from the DNA test carried out by the Netherlands Forensic Medicine Institute on behalf of public prosecutors.

“It is reassuring that his death has been confirmed because he can no longer cause pain,” prosecutor Serge Brammertz said when the news broke. Protais described Mpiranya as a feared and notorious fugitive.

As commander of the Presidential Guard, Mpiranya played a pivotal role in fueling the genocide that killed more than half a million people in four months. When President Habyarimana’s plane was shot down, it sparked violence against his Tutsi dissidents and moderate Hutus.

For example, Mpiranya was held responsible for the murder and mutilation of Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, three other ministers and other politicians. According to the prosecutors, he was behind the murder of ten Belgian blue helmets who were supposed to protect the prime minister. He was charged with eight charges, including genocide, war crimes, rape and other crimes against humanity.

Mpiranya died in 2006 at the age of 50 in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. After fleeing his homeland at the end of the genocide and having lived in Cameroon for a number of years, he ended up there. Zimbabwe would have known she had been accused, but she could use the country’s military experience to help her evade justice.

Four years later, Mpiranya died of a heart attack caused by tuberculosis. He was buried on his own date of birth, but under the pseudonym he escaped to the country. The grave was recently recovered by international researchers.

A total of 93 suspects were charged by the Rwandan court, Mpiranya being the main fugitive. The Court completed its work in 2015, but the so-called Now International Mechanism for Criminal Courts is still dealing with pending cases. Now that Mpiranya’s fate is known, the search for five fugitives continues.
