American scientists first grew plants in the soil of the moon. The discovery that plants can germinate in alien countries could be of great importance for future space missions, but could also be applied here on Earth.
Anna-Lisa Paul, one of the scientists, said: “Everything has sprouted. We were really surprised,” he says. “We were really surprised, we didn’t expect that.”
Researchers had previously grown plants in soil that closely resembled lunar soil. So on rare occasions, NASA gave them the chance to do another experiment with real lunar dust: The team took 12 grams of material collected during the Apollo 11, 12 and 17 missions.
The team used small thimble-sized pots to germinate the plants. Each time, 1 gram of soil, food, water and some seeds of the Arabidopsis flower was placed in it. This plant was chosen because it is solid and its entire genome has been mapped.
